DAWSON-JONES DETERMINED TO BUILD ON DEWSBURY DOUBLE

Matty Dawson-Jones hopes his ‘two try display' in the opening day defeat of Dewsbury Rams is a sign of things to come – whilst hailing the spirit in the camp.

The 31-year-old has endured a difficult last two years at the club through COVID and injury but came back with a bang with his quickfire double to kickstart the 2022 season.

Having signed a one-year deal towards the end of last season, the flyer spoke of his intent to pay back the support shown in him by the supporters and staff at the club.

And on the back of the work done by the performance staff, he feels he is in the best condition he’s been in for a while and looks to build on his opening day display.

“I am feeling the benefit of a full pre-season, I feel fit for the first time in a long time and that is credit to the programmes put together by Kane (Daniels) and Joel (Fulford) and the rest of the staff,” said Dawson-Jones, who is sponsored by Declan and Lachlan Smith.

“The team performance, aside from the last ten minutes in both halves, were pretty much perfect and we stuck to the game plan. On a personal level, playing was enough for me so to get the two tries topped it off I was happy.

“I was having a bit of a crack with the boys as I didn’t see a lot of the ball in good ball areas in the trial matches so it was nice to get two early ones and hopefully I can get a few more this season.

“The first game of the season is always hard as you never know how the other team are going to come out and play so we just needed to stick to what John tells us and we did that for long periods.

“You can see the togetherness is there in the squad even with the new faces coming in and it is something John spoke about in pre-season.

“We are full of spirit, we are a group striving to do things for each other, do the one percenters that make you better as a team and hopefully we can continue to do that.”

Matty is in contention to make his second appearance of the season when Sheffield Eagles come to town on Sunday.
